10 people arrested at protest outside Sen. Kyrsten Sinema’s Phoenix office – AZFamily

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) – Ten people were arrested Tuesday during a protest outside the Phoenix office of Sen. Kyrsten Sinema.

The demonstration came the day after the Democratic Senator voiced her support of the “filibuster,” a Senate rule that requires 60 votes to pass most bills. Those who oppose the filibuster say lawmakers use it to block legislation.

Protesters carried signs that read “End the filibuster,” and “Protect Our Democracy,” and “Shame! Shame!”

Protesters oppose filibuster

Phoenix police say they became aware of a planned demonstration at a business complex near 32nd Street and Camelback Road. The property manager of the complex told detectives that the demonstrators were interfering with normal business operations, and that he had asked the group to leave the private property.

Detectives informed the event organizer about the manager’s request. The group organizer cooperated with detectives, but police say a smaller group remained on the property.

Officers then made announcements over a loudspeaker, asking the group to leave. Additionally, detectives approached each person individually, asking them to leave. However, ten people continued to ignore the officers’ requests, police say. Police arrested the ten without incident, and issued citations. The names of those arrested have not been released.

GOP ready to block elections bill in Senate showdown

While some Democrats want to change the Senate’s rules to push the elections bill and other priorities past the filibuster, some Democrats, including  Sinema, are opposed. Pres. Biden, too, has said in the past that he wants to leave the filibuster intact.

“The filibuster compels moderation and helps protect the country from wild swings,” Sinema wrote Monday in an opinion piece for The Washington Post. She welcomed a full debate “so senators and our constituents can hear and fully consider the concerns and consequences.”
