Ken Starr said that while Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation has not yet revealed evidence of Trump-Russia collusion, the probe has not “gone off on a tangent.”
Mueller this week filed a sentencing memo for Michael Flynn, President Trump’s former national security adviser.
In the highly redacted memo, Mueller recommended little to no prison time for Flynn, stating that the former three-star Army general has offered “substantial” help to investigators about “several ongoing investigations.” Flynn, who pleaded guilty to lying about his conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, is set to be sentenced Dec. 18.
The release came as additional sentencing memorandums are expected within days in the cases of former Trump attorney Michael Cohen and ex-campaign chairman Paul Manafort.
On “Tucker Carlson Tonight” Wednesday, Starr, who led the independent counsel probe into Bill Clinton, said the Flynn memo reveals that the former national security adviser lied repeatedly to different Justice Department agencies.

“You can say, ‘Who cares about this?’ And I’ll say, ‘Don’t lie to the investigators,'” Starr said. “From what I’ve seen, there’s no perjury trap.”
He explained that Flynn’s conversations with Kislyak were “completely appropriate” given his role in the then-incoming White House, yet Flynn chose to lie about them and also mislead about his lobbyist work on behalf of Turkey.
Starr noted that it could have been an honest mistake, but Flynn pleaded guilty to lying, and judging by the memo, it was a “pattern.”
He said it’s an “American tragedy” to see this happen to a decorated military and intelligence officer, but that does not mean that Flynn should be excused for lying to federal investigators.
