A police officer was killed during a traffic stop early Wednesday in the Central Valley city of Newman, prompting a wide search for the suspect.

Officer Ronil Singh, 33, was fatally shot shortly before 1 a.m., the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office reported. The shooter fled the scene before fellow officers responded to the report of shots fired.

Images have been released of a man seen at a convenience store around the time of the shooting and of the truck he is believed to have been driving, a gray or silver extended-cab Dodge Ram 1500, model year 2002-2009, with paper dealer plates.

A “blue alert” was sent at 7:30 a.m. and again at 8:20 a.m. to mobile phone users in Stanislaus, Merced, San Joaquin, Tuolumne and Santa Clara counties.

Newman is a small city off Interstate 5 north of Los Banos. Singh had been a police officer there since 2011.

Anyone with information on the suspect or the crime is asked to call Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Detective Michael Fisher at 209-525-7083 or dispatch at 209-552-2468.
