School closures, cancellations in Greater Houston Area –

HOUSTON — As Tropical Depression Imelda threatens the Texas’ Gulf Coast, school districts across the region are monitoring the weather closely.

Some school districts have already made the call to cancel classes Wednesday. Others are cancelling after-school activities for Tuesday.

School closures

College of the Mainland closed Tuesday, September 17, and will remain closed Wednesday, September 18, for both day and night classes.

Galveston ISD is announcing the decision to cancel classes for students Wednesday, September 18, 2019.Changing weather events and additional communication will be shared via website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and local cable Channel 17.

Galveston College will be closed on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2019, due to the threat of heavy rain and flooding. Day and evening classes have been canceled. The college will be open and classes will continue for the remainder of Tuesday, Sept. 17.

HCC: All Houston Community College’s campuses will close from 5 p.m. Tuesday through Wednesday. No classes or activities

High Island ISD: No classes Wednesday.

Mainland Preparatory Classical Academy: will cancel school for tomorrow Wednesday, September 18, 2019. Our main concern is the safety of our students and parents. Please continue to monitor your emails and your Remind app for any updates.

Santa Fe ISD: All campuses and District offices will be closed on Wednesday. The district says there will be no need to make up the student minutes for this event as our calendar provides for this type of closure. 

Texas A&M Galveston: Campus is closed effective 3 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 17. All classes Wednesday, Sept. 18 are cancelled. Visit for more information.

Texas City ISD: All schools closed Wednesday; Any other changes to the schedule beyond Wednesday will be made at a later time.

After-school cancellations

  • Houston ISD: All after-school activities and sporting events are canceled for Wednesday due to the threat of inclement weather and the potential for flooded and dangerous road conditions. 
  • Santa Fe ISD: All extracurricular and after school activities have been canceled for Wednesday and will be rescheduled at a later time. (*Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly listed Santa Fe ISD as having canceled all classes. As of this publication, only extracurricular and after school activities have been canceled for Wednesday.)
  • Sheldon ISD: Cancels all after-school activities today.

Other cancellations, closures or delays

The Houston Zoo will be closed on Wed., Sept. 18. The safety of zoo staff, guests and animals is the zoo’s top priority. The animals will be cared for during the storm by a select group of zoo staff who will stay at the zoo throughout the weather event. The animals have safe and secure barns and night houses that have been constructed to weather storms like this one. The zoo will update its plans to reopen as the weather event continues. 

Koala Kare Daycare & Preschool in Galveston will be closed Wednesday.

City of Bellaire: Solid waste and recycling collection is cancelled for Wednesday, September 18.  This is being done to minimize the likelihood of trash and recyclables from being washed into the storm sewers system which can exacerbate street flooding.  Please do not put your trash and recycle bins out and take them back into your home if you have put the items out already.   These items will be collected on your next scheduled solid waste or recycling collection day.
