Rockford man charged with armed robbery after hours-long standoff – WIFR

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) After a seven-hour standoff with police, a Rockford man is arrested and charged with armed robbery, holding one female employee hostage and sexually assaulting her at Heritage Credit Union, 5959 E. State St., Rockford.

Nicholas August, 39, is in jail on a $2 million bond. His charges include armed robbery, two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault and aggravated unlawful restraint.

Rockford police say August went into the bank around 2:30 p.m. and threatened the employees. Investigators say he then took a 39-year-old female employee hostage and ordered everyone else out of the building.

Just before 9 p.m., hostage negotiators convinced August to surrender. He came out of the building with the hostage. Investigators say he had a pellet gun that looked like a real firearm.

The employee was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

SWAT team members, hostage negotiators, Rockford Park District police, Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State Police and the FBI assisted.

The Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s office also says August was wanted on other outstanding warrants.
