Joe Biden’s White House chief of staff Ron Klain has warned that the President should not “underestimate” the chances of former President Donald Trump retaking the presidency in 2024.

“I wouldn’t want to estimate or underestimate Donald Trump as an opponent if he chooses to run,” Klain said on “Axios on HBO” in an interview aired Sunday, per CNN.

Klain said that both prospective candidates would be judged on their record in office, and said that Biden’s would be a strong one by the end of his first term.

“My experience, Mike, is that incumbent presidents are judged on their record,” he said.

“President Trump had a bad record in 2020. Joe Biden is hopefully assembling a powerful record to run on if he runs for reelection in 2024.”

Trump has frequently suggested he may run again in 2024. He said in April that he was “very seriously” considering another presidential run.

“I say this: I am looking at it very seriously, beyond seriously,”the former president told Fox News when asked about the prospect

His niece Mary Trump has suggested that the former president was not seriously considering running, but would keep the option open in order to keep raising money from his supporters, who have donated millions of pounds to fund his political ambitions since he left the White House in January.

President Biden has also indicated he plans run in 2024.

“The answer is yes, my plan is to run for reelection,” Biden told reporters in March. “That’s my expectation.”

“I’m a great respecter of fate — I’ve never been able to plan four and half, three and a half years ahead for certain,” the president said.

Biden also scoffed at the notion of Trump running 2024 when he was asked whether he thought Trump would run, saying: “I have no idea.”

“I have no idea if there will be a Republican Party,” he said.
