Florida educators are being allowed to get the coronavirus vaccine at FEMA sites and Publix, CVS and Walmart pharmacies across the state. The locations are following federal guidelines the Biden administration released this week, which are broader for educators than Florida’s. For teachers, Florida limits the vaccine to school employees 50 and older who work in kindergarten through 12th grade. The federal guidelines allow day care workers, preschool teachers and educators in elementary, middle and high schools to be vaccinated with no age limit.Orange County Public Schools put out a message to employees on Thursday that told them they are eligible to be vaccinated at any federal distribution site. “This morning the governor confirmed that all K-12 employees, regardless of age, are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at all Florida federal distribution sites,” the message from Orange County schools said. On Wednesday, CVS confirmed that it began vaccinating educators, day care and preschool teachers of any age. Walmart followed suit on Thursday and opened its vaccine portal to Florida educators of any age. Wendy Doromal, the head of the Orange County Teachers Union says the news was thrilling. “They’ve been doing a heroic job in challenging times for so long so we’re very excited,” Dormal said. On Thursday during a news conference, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis stood by his policy that the state and county-run vaccination sites will, for now, only vaccinate educators that are age 50 and over.Publix and Walgreens are also receiving vaccines through the federal retail pharmacy program. Both will be offering vaccines to educators under 50 as well, however Walgreens is just starting vaccinations in Florida.
