Kamala Harris’ Comedy Central interview turns awkward then contentious over Charlamagne tha God question – SFGate

2 min read

Vice President Kamala Harris did an interview on Comedy Central’s “Tha God’s Honest Truth” with host Charlamagne Tha God Friday night that turned contentious at the very end.

The pair spoke for about 20 minutes, but near the end, Charlamagne asked Harris, “I want to know who the real president of this country is, Joe Biden or Joe Manchin,” clearly a reference to the Senate delaying action on the president’s Build Back Better spending bill after failing to secure support from the West Virginia senator.

Immediately after the question was asked, an aide (speculated to be outgoing spokesperson Symone Sanders by those on social media) could be heard off-screen saying, “I’m sorry I interrupted, but I don’t think the vice president can hear you.”

“She can hear me,” Charlamagne says as the aide continues to speak. He later turns and says to someone off-camera, “They’re acting like she can’t hear me.”

Regardless of whether the aide legitimately thought there was a technical snafu or, if, as some prominent progressive Twitter users hypothesized, the aide was attempting to stop Harris from answering the question, the vice president did weigh in and unloaded on Charlamagne.

“Come on, Charalamagne,” Harris said, as the host continued to ask who “the real president” is. “It’s Joe Biden. And don’t start talking like a Republican, about asking whether or not he’s president… It’s Joe Biden, and I’m vice president and my name is Kamala Harris.”

Harris continued, listing a series of policy initiatives and goals the Biden administration is pursuing. “The reality is, because we are in office, we do things like the child tax credit… It is the work of saying we are going to get lead out of pipes and paint, because our babies are suffering because of that.”

The vice president’s notably charged response garnered appreciation from Charlamange. “I want you to know, that Madame vice president, that Kamala Harris? That’s the one I like,” he said. “That’s the one putting pressure on people in Senate hearings, that’s the one I’d like to see more often out here in these streets,”
