Kamala Harris sworn in as nation’s first female vice president – POLITICO

1 min read

Vice President Kamala Harris took her oath of office Wednesday morning, cementing her status as both the first woman and person of color to hold the nation’s second-highest office.

Harris was sworn in on a pair of Bibles, one of which was previously owned by Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall — the first African-American to ever serve on the high court.

She will quickly return to the Senate, where she represented California for the past four years, both to participate in the swearing in of Georgia’s two new Democratic senators and to begin serving as the tie-breaking vote in the evenly divided Senate. That task has the potential to occupy much of her early tenure in the administration and tether her to Washington for extended stretches of time.
