The other officer remains hospitalized and is expected to survive, as is the 23-year-old suspect.
The incident happened on East 187th Street and Beaumont Avenue in the Belmont section around 8:15 p.m. Wednesday.
According to NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea, police received a 911 call about a man with a gun at the location.Two officers responded, and surveillance video shows what happened when they arrived.
The officers confront the suspect, whom they recognize from the description they were given.
The suspect reaches for a gun and a struggle ensues, during which the suspect fires at the officers.
A female officer, a one-year veteran of the force who also serves on the U.S. Air Force reserves, is hit twice in the upper right arm.The second officer, an 8-year veteran, is struck in the right armpit area, with the bullet coming out of his left chest.
The female officer returns the gunfire, firing five times, and the suspect is shot three times.
All three were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital.
Both officers and the suspect are expected to survive.
The female officer is expected to be released from the hospital sometime after 11 a.m. Thursday.
The other officer “is probably going have to spend a couple days in the hospital,” said Shea.
‘We have lot to be thankful for,” the commissioner added, citing no loss of life in the incident.
Police recovered the suspect’s gun at the scene.
They said the gun was reported stolen from Georgia, and that the suspect is a known career criminal.
