The deputy and his family were asleep in their apartment when someone broke in, according to Houston police. The off-duty deputy woke up and confronted the suspect and they exchanged gunfire before he fled the apartment.The 4-year-old was shot in the arm, and her mother was shot in the leg, according to Houston police chief Troy Finner.

The deputy constable told investigators that he believes he hit the suspect during the shootout, and a blood trail leading away from the apartment was discovered, according to Houston police chief Troy Finner.The 4-year-old was in surgery at a hospital Sunday morning and was stable.
Authorities fanned out in the area as they looked for the man responsible, but he was still on the loose.
“If anyone hears about a suspect going to the hospital, please notify HPD homicide,” Finner said.

Authorities did not have a detailed description of the man they were looking for, except that he was dressed in black and may have been around 5 feet 5 inches tall. He was armed with a shotgun and some type of assault rifle, police said.
The deputy constable works for Harris County Precinct 1 and has been with the agency for around three years.
Investigators weren’t yet sure if the deputy constable was targeted or if the intrusion was a random act.
