‘There’s no way I’m getting out of here’; lobster diver swallowed by humpback whale off Provincetown – OregonLive

A commercial lobster diver was injured on Friday when he said he was suddenly swallowed by a humpback whale off Provincetown.

The diver, Michael Packard, told the Cape Cod Times that he thought he had broken a bone after the encounter, but only suffered bruises. He detailed the incident in a Facebook post Friday afternoon.

“Hi everyone, I just want to clarify what happened to me today. I was lobster diving and A humpback whale tried to eat me. I was in his closed mouth for about 30 to 40 seconds before he rose to the surface and spit me out. I am very bruised up but have no broken bones,” he wrote.

Packard told the Times that after he was enclosed in the whale’s mouth, he thought he was going to die.

“I could sense I was moving, and I could feel the whale squeezing with the muscles in his mouth,” he said.

“I thought to myself, ‘there’s no way I’m getting out of here. I’m done, I’m dead. All I could think of was my boys, they’re 12 and 15 years old,” Packard said.

Packard thanked Provincetown rescue officials for helping him in the aftermath of the incident.
